God and Money

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” – Matthew 6:24

Recently something is going on in my family, and if I would be frank, it is to do with one of the most satanic things in this world: mammon. I was raised in the financially unstable family. We always had financial difficulties throughout my whole childhood, to the extent where we were unable to change the car that was constantly broke down, the car that cannot bring us into a further distance, into a better car that at least works, cause’ we simply cannot afford it. For someone from such family, it is rather normal to have the thought of wanting to improve the living quality of this family. Before I get to know Christ, to earn a lot of money was the primary agenda in my life.

But is money really that important for us? I cannot deny that fact that indeed without a single cent in our pockets, most probably we will starve to death, on a street, under a big hot scourging sun. However, is mammon the first agenda in our lives? There are a lot of people out there, not knowing how great God’s love for us is, and they labored all throughout their lives for more and more money. But for me, despite it sounds ridiculous to certain individuals, I choose to believe in one true, loving, and wealthy God.

“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6: 25 -34

Indeed, the blessing of God towards us is more than we ever needed, as how He has shown me this day. Indisputably I am not from a well-financed family. Even until this day, we might still have little problems here and there of meeting our financial needs. But you know, when I look back into my life and carefully examined the details of it, I am surprise with how blessed I am, one of which, is my family. My mom as you might know raised three of us up single-handedly. And you can just imagine how difficult it is for a lady to raise her children all by her own! But one thing about her is she never complaint. Whatever challenges that lies in front of her, she will always have the strength to move on. And because of her strength, because she never gave up and most importantly because of her love towards us, I am who I am today. She is definitely one of the best blessings God has ever given me in my life. And truthfully, and I praise and thank and praise Him for my mom and for my family. Undeniably it might not be a wealthy one, but at least I know that my family is filled with joy and living together and peace.

I have seen how wealth tears a family apart. I have seen how wealth destroys brotherhoods and friendships. I have seen how the life of someone who owns a huge business, who has a great amount of income: they have no peace in life, and the joys they have are all short-lived. Yes, I do not need to be a rich person in the future, cause’ I know, if I have God, I have everything in my life that I ever needed. His grace alone is more than enough for me.

If we just believe and have the faith in Him, our God is so loving and so rich, don’t you think He will not provide us, His sons and daughters with all the necessities?

I might not be wealthy, but I know I am truly blessed, and that my life will only be complete in Him and Him alone.
